In this story, Mpho, 27, from Bloemfontein, shares her experience having a medical abortion (abortion with pills) at our Dr Musa Safe Abortion Clinic clinic.
In 2024, when I was 23, I found out that I was pregnant. There wasn’t a second thought for me. I didn’t want to have kids and neither did my boyfriend at the time. When I told one of my friends at work, she said I should take some time to think about it, but I knew instinctively that I was going to have an abortion.

I had a few phone calls with Dr Musa before I went into the clinic. Everyone I spoke to was so kind and lovely. There was absolutely no judgment. The process was all explained really clearly. I remember one of the phone calls was arranged for the morning, so I sat in the carpark at work on the phone and I had such a nice chat to the nurse. She answered all my questions. It felt like a really safe space to discuss anything that was worrying me about the process.
I went to Dr Musa clinic to pick up the medication and everyone in the clinic was very attentive. I took my first pill when I got home and the next day I took the second set. I took all the pain killers and got in bed with a hot water bottle. There was one moment when I had a panic that I had thrown up. I started cramping but it was alright. I managed to sleep, and the pain passed.
