How does a medical abortion work?
You can receive medical abortion treatment as soon as you find out you are pregnant, privately and discreetly. Two types of medications are used. Both are tablets a patient takes by mouth (orally).

Why should I consider a medical abortion?
This is a very personal decision. Many women find the option of a medical abortion preferable to undergoing a surgical abortion procedure. A medical abortion can be completed earlier in pregnancy, privately and discreetly. You can receive medical abortion treatment as soon as you find out you are pregnant, and up to 10 weeks after the first day of your last period. It has been deemed safe and carries no long-term risks for future pregnancies.
Typical medical abortions have a high rate of success (98%) and are non-invasive. They do not require advance preparation, and do not require you to find someone to transport you home from the clinic. Is medical abortion safe?
Yes – Medical abortion is very safe. Unless there is a very rare and serious complication that is not treated, there is no risk to future pregnancies or to the patient’s health. Having an abortion does not increase a woman’s risk of breast cancer or affect fertility. Emotional problems after an abortion are rare, and are more likely to happen in women who must end a pregnancy for health reasons, people who do not have support, or people who have a history of mental health issues. First Trimester Abortions
A first trimester abortion is an abortion done up to 12 weeks of pregnancy. There are two types of abortions that can be performed during the first trimester, a surgical abortion and a chemical abortion.
Second Trimester Abortions
A second trimester abortion is done between 12-26 weeks of pregnancy. The procedure sometimes can involve two or three consecutive office visits all depends on ultrasound information and patient medical history, although some patients are able to have the procedure in one visit. In both cases, we use only sterilized surgical instruments and sterile, one-use-only, disposable plastic uterine curettes.
During the second step of the procedure, the gynecologist, with special expertise in second trimester abortions, uses a method called dilatation and evacuation (D&E). D&E is the safest method for second trimester abortions. In order to increase the safety for our patients, we always use ultrasound guidance during every second trimester abortion.
Surgical Abortions

A surgical abortion can be done safely only if the pregnancy can be definitely seen inside the uterus on careful ultrasound exam. The lower limit of visualization of a pregnancy by ultrasound is 5 weeks by menstrual age (approximately 3 weeks after conception).

Most women can carry on their usual lives at home or work after taking the pills, but may have some bleeding and period-like pains.
The second medication is the pills which makes the uterus contract, expelling the pregnancy similar to a miscarriage .Abortion pills are placed in the vagina. Try to insert them as high up into your vagina as possible. Don’t worry too much about the exact position of the tablets in the vagina;
What happens after taking abortion pills
You’ll experience bleeding and some cramping. It’s very important you use pads and not tampons to avoid infection. You’ll be advised to take pain relief in the form of painkillers. The cramps may become strong – this is a normal part of the abortion process. Bleeding may get heavier and you may pass clots. This is usually at the time you begin to lose your pregnancy. Often the pregnancy is passed into the toilet. You may not see it specifically, and it may appear as a clot.
Side effects of the medication may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and shivering. Once the pregnancy has been passed, your bleeding will usually lessen and become like a slightly heavier period. It may continue to be quite heavy for a day or two as the uterus needs to contract and return to its normal size.Most women pass the pregnancy within 4 or 5 hours after taking the medication. For others it can be quicker or take longer.
